Hedy Lamarr is well known actress from the Golden Age of MGM. She was in many of their most famous movies from this age and starred alongside such actors as Clark Gable and Spencer Tracey. But there is so much about this amazing woman that is not as well known.

Hedy was born on November 9, 1914 in Vienna, Austria-Hungary. Her birth name was Hedwig Eva Maria Kiesler. She began acting in 1930 when she was only 16 years old. One of her films, Ecstasy, was well received in certain locations but not in America.

Hedy eventually immigrated to the United States from Austria and even helped her mother escape to the United States. She quickly made a name for herself in the movie industry with many highly acclaimed films.

Hedy also had a long list of husbands. From these marriages, there were three children.

  • Gene Markey (1939 – 1941)
  • John Loder (1943 – 1947)
  • Teddy Stauffer (1951 – 1952)
  • W. Howard Lee (1953 – 1960)
  • Lewis J. Boies (1963 – 1965)

The children were:

  • James Lamarr Markey ( born January 9, 1939)
  • Denise Loder (born January 19, 1945)
  • Anthony Loder (born February 1, 1947)

There were a lot of rumors surrounding James. Hedy reported that she adopted James. But in 2001, it was reported that James found documents that stated that he was the out-of-wedlock son of Hedy and John Loder.

What makes Hedy so remarkable is the fact that after acting, Hedy turned to science. She played a large role in creating spread spectrum technology. This is extremely important to us as it is the precursor to Bluetooth and wifi. Her invention shaped our entire world.

Eventually Hedy retired to Casselberry, Florida where she died on January 19, 2000.
